SS-31, also known in clinical research as elamipretide, MTP-131, or Bendavia, is a mitochondria-targeted tetrapeptide studied for its interaction with cardiolipin on the inner mitochondrial membrane. Cardiolipin is an important mitochondrial phospholipid involved in cristae structure, electron transport chain organization, cytochrome c activity, and efficient ATP production. Because of this relationship, SS-31 is commonly studied in models where mitochondrial stress, cardiolipin disruption, oxidative damage, and energy-production deficits are central research themes.
The scientific interest around SS-31 comes from its ability to localize to the inner mitochondrial membrane and influence mitochondrial structure and function. Research has explored SS-31 in connection with mitochondrial morphology, electron transport, reactive oxygen species, cytochrome c/cardiolipin peroxidase activity, ATP recovery, and tissue stress models involving cardiac, skeletal muscle, renal, neurological, and age-related mitochondrial pathways.
